Wegovy 7.2mg: The Higher Dose Explained

Wegovy 7.2mg - the highest dose of semaglutide licensed in the UK - is now available, and as of April 2026, it can be delivered as a single injection rather than the three separate pens originally required at launch.

This higher dose marks a significant development in the medical weight-loss treatment market, giving existing Wegovy patients a stronger option if they've plateaued on the standard 2.4mg dose - and giving new patients more choice when starting treatment.

The higher dose offers enhanced appetite suppression and greater average weight loss - when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity - compared to the standard 2.4mg dose, based on robust STEP UP trial data.

With ongoing price changes affecting alternative treatments such as Mounjaro, patients and clinicians continue to pay close attention to Wegovy 7.2mg as a viable option in weight loss journeys.

What is Wegovy 7.2mg?

Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist licensed in the UK for weight management. It works by reducing appetite, calming food noise, and slowing digestion, helping patients feel full for longer, when used in tandem with a healthy lifestyle and diet.

Until the 7.2mg dose was introduced, the highest available maintenance dose was 2.4mg once weekly. The 7.2mg dose represents a three-fold increase and is designed for patients who have already reached and tolerated the 2.4mg dose but have plateaued in their weight loss. It is important to note that the 7.2mg dose is not a starting dose - all patients must titrate through the lower doses first.

When was Wegovy 7.2mg approved in the UK?

The MHRA approved the 7.2mg maximum weekly dose of Wegovy on 12 January 2026. At that point, the dose had to be delivered using three separate 2.4mg injections administered on the same day.

On 14 April 2026, the MHRA approved a dedicated single-dose 7.2mg pen, allowing eligible patients to receive their full weekly dose in one injection rather than three. The medication itself is unchanged - only the delivery format has been simplified.

How is Wegovy 7.2 mg supplied?

Wegovy 7.2

Wegovy 7.2mg is now available as a single-use pre-filled pen, with a monthly supply consisting of 4 pens - one used once weekly. This replaces the original method, where patients needed three separate 2.4mg pens injected on the same day to reach the full 7.2mg dose.

If you started Wegovy 7.2mg before the single-pen format became available, you may have been using the three-pen method - our specialist pharmacists can confirm whether you're now able to switch to the simplified single-pen version.

Clinical trial results: What the data shows

Clinical Trial Results

The 7.2 mg dose was studied in the STEP UP and STEP UP T2D clinical trials, involving participants with obesity, both with and without type 2 diabetes.

Key findings include:

  • Average total weight loss of up to 20.7% of body weight
  • Around one-third of participants lost 25% or more of their starting weight
  • Continued weight loss throughout the 72-week trial period, with no early plateau.

These results place Wegovy 7.2 mg close to the outcomes seen with higher-dose of Mounjaro (tirzepatide), whilst maintaining the prior established semaglutide safety profile.

Safety and side effect concerns of Wegovy 7.2 mg

The safety and side-effect profile of Wegovy 7.2 mg was broadly consistent with lower doses and other, similar GLP-1 weight loss medications. Common side effects included:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Higher blood pressure

A higher incidence of dysaesthesia (tingling or skin sensitivity) was observed at the 7.2 mg dose. Most cases were mild to moderate, and over 85% resolved without stopping treatment.

Importantly, discontinuation rates due to side effects remained low, suggesting that most patients were able to tolerate the higher dose when appropriately escalated.

How does Wegovy 7.2mg compare to Mounjaro?

Comparing Mounjaro and Wegovy like-for-like can be tricky. However, it is fair to say, in this regard, Wegovy 7.2mg (20.7% average weight loss) now sits close to the results seen with Mounjaro's higher doses (around 20-22.5% in the SURMOUNT-1 trial), making it a genuine alternative for patients who'd prefer to stay on semaglutide rather than switch medications entirely. The two treatments work differently - Mounjaro acts on two separate hormone receptors (GLP-1 and GIP), while Wegovy works on GLP-1 alone - which is part of why some patients respond better to one than the other.

Who may benefit from Wegovy 7.2 mg?

Wegovy 7.2 mg may be suitable for patients who:

  • Are currently taking 2.4 mg Wegovy but have reached a weight-loss plateau
  • Continue to struggle with appetite control
  • Have tried Mounjaro without satisfactory results
  • Experience side effects with tirzepatide and are seeking an alternative
  • Have tolerated semaglutide well at lower doses

As with all GLP-1 weight loss treatments, patients must progress through lower doses before being considered for the higher strength.

iQ Doctor’s Final Take

“Wegovy 7.2mg gives patients who've stalled on the standard dose a credible next step, and the move to a single pen finally makes it practical to take. But a higher dose isn't automatically the right dose. Whether you move up should come down to your progress, your tolerance and a proper conversation with your prescriber.”

Wegovy 7.2mg has become a genuinely powerful option for patients who have stalled on existing weight loss treatments, and the move to a single-pen format has removed what was the biggest practical drawback of the higher dose. With enhanced appetite suppression and weight-loss outcomes now backed by real-world UK prescribing rather than just trial data, this is a development worth discussing with your prescriber if you've plateaued on 2.4mg. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wegovy 7.2mg available on the NHS?

Not yet. Wegovy 7.2mg is currently available privately through providers like iQ Doctor. NHS access requires a separate review by NICE, which typically takes 6-9 months following MHRA approval - meaning NHS availability isn't expected until later in 2026 at the earliest.

Can I switch straight to the single-pen version?

If you're already established on the 7.2mg dose using the three-pen method, your prescriber can confirm whether you're able to move to the single-pen version - there's no need to restart your dose escalation.

How do I know if I should move up to 7.2mg?

If you've been on 2.4mg for at least four weeks and your weight loss has plateaued, it's worth discussing the higher dose with iQ Doctor's clinical team during a follow-up consultation. Moving up a dose is a clinical decision based on your individual progress and tolerance.
