What is Thrush?

Thrush is a very common condition that occurs when the balance of good and bad bacteria in the body is disrupted. Thrush symptoms include a thick white discharge (like cottage cheese), and irritation around the vagina or penis (balanitis). Thrush can also appear on the tongue and at the back of the throat (although the treatment for oral thrush will be different). Fluconazole can help if you are experiencing these symptoms and have been diagnosed with thrush.

What does fluconazole do in the body?

Fluconazole works by inhibiting the ability of Candida albicans to reproduce. This medication aids in the treatment of infections caused by these fungi. It also actively attacks the fungus causing holes in the membranes and causing it to die. This means that fluconazole will rapidly remove any fungal infection and the appearance of the thrush should begin to disappear. This will give time for your body to rebalance its natural bacteria so as to avoid re-infection.

Candidiasis can also infect other parts of your body, such as your throat and oesophagus. This can often occur as a result of poor oral hygiene or after completing a short course of antibiotics. Antibiotics can often disturb the body's natural bacterial flora which can give rise to opportunistic infections. Fluconazole may not be the best option for oral thrush, there are other more appropriate options for this such as Daktarin oral Gel.

How often should you take Fluconazole?

Fluconazole is administered in a single dose. Within a few days, symptoms should begin to fade. If symptoms persist beyond a week, you should consult with your doctor.

What are the benefits of taking Fluconazole?

  • For vaginal and penile thrush

  • Targets the source of infection

  • Symptoms start to clear within two days

  • Soothes redness, irritation and itching

  • Re-balances good and bad bacteria

How do you know if Fluconazole is working?

If you have vaginal thrush or balanitis, taking fluconazole should improve your symptoms within 7 days. If you have a serious fungal infection, you will need to ask your doctor how long fluconazole will take to work. It could take up to two weeks for the full effect to take place.

Does Fluconazole have any side effects?

Yes. Although fluconazole is a one time medication it still  may cause side effects such as headache, nausea or upset stomach. Severe rash may present in people with lowered immunity. In this case the medication should be stopped and you should consult your doctor immediately.

Can I use this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

This medication should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless under the direct supervision of your GP. A discussion of the benefits and potential harms of starting this medication on you and your newborn/unborn child needs to be had with your GP.

When should I see the GP about this?

It is always recommended to see the GP in person before commencing any medication where this is possible. However it is more pressing to do this if the following instances occur:

  • You have had thrush more than twice in the past 6 months

  • If you are taking terfenadine or cisapride

  • If you have any conditions affecting your liver or kidneys or any other chronic conditions.

  • If you have had recent exposure to a STI.

  • If you are unsure about the cause of your symptoms

  • If you experiencing abdominal pain or burning sensation when urinating

  • If you have ulcers or blisters in or around your genitalia

For women specifically

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • If you have abnormal or irregular bleeding or blood stained discharge

Men specifically

  • If your sexual partner does NOT have thrush

  • If you have abnormal penile leakage/discharge

  • If your penis has started to smell
