What is Orajel Maximum Strength Toothache Gel?
Orajel Maximum Strength Toothache Gel is a topical gel used for the temporary relief of toothache pain. It contains benzocaine, a local anaesthetic that numbs the painful area to provide fast, targeted relief.
It can be used for:
- Toothache pain
- Pain from a broken tooth or tooth decay while waiting to see a dentist
- Localised mouth or gum pain linked to a sore tooth
Orajel is intended for short-term use and does not treat the underlying cause of toothache.
Who is Orajel Maximum Strength Toothache Gel suitable for?
This medicine requires a consultation to ensure it is suitable for you.
Suitable for:
- Adults
- Children ages 12 years and over
Not suitable for:
- Children under 12 years
- Anyone allergic to benzocaine or other local anaesthetics
- Anyone with a history of methaemoglobinaemia
- Use on large areas of irritated tissue inside the mouth

How to use Orajel Maximum Strength Toothache Gel
Use exactly as directed on the label or as advised by your pharmacist.
Typical use
- Wash your hands before and after use
- Apply a small amount of gel (about the size of a pea) to a clean fingertip or cotton bud
- Apply directly to the painful area of the tooth or gum
- Use up to 4 times daily if needed
Important advice
- Do not use continuously
- Avoid hot food or drinks immediately after use as the numbed area may be more easily injured
- If toothache persists, seek dental advice as soon as possible
If you use more than you should
- If too much is used or accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice
- If a child uses this product accidentally, seek advice immediately

- Store at room temperature and keep the cap tightly closed
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children
- Do not use after the expiry date
