What is Bonjela Original Mouth Ulcer Relief?

Bonjela Original is a clear mouth gel used to ease pain and discomfort from:

  • Mouth ulcers
  • Cold sores
  • Sore spots caused by dentures or braces

It contains:

  • Choline salicylate to relieve pain and reduce inflammation
  • Cetalkonium chloride which is an antiseptic to help reduce germs on the sore area

Who is it suitable for?

Suitable for:

  • Adults and young people aged 16 years and over

Not suitable for:

  • Children and adolescents under 16 years due to a possible link between salicylates and Reye’s syndrome when used in children

Who should not use it / Warnings

Do not use if:

  • You are allergic to aspirin or salicylates
  • You are allergic to any ingredient in the gel

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before use if you:

  • Take blood-thinning medicines
  • Have a history of stomach ulcers
  • Have asthma or have reacted to aspirin or similar painkillers before

Stop using and seek urgent medical help if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as wheezing, breathing difficulty, swelling, or a widespread rash.

How to use

Where to use

Inside the mouth or on the gums only.

How much

Apply about 1 cm of gel.

How to apply

  • Wash your hands
  • Using a clean fingertip, gently massage the gel onto the sore area

How often

Use no more than once every 3 hours.

If you wear dentures

  • Apply the gel to the gums, not the dentures
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before putting dentures back in

For best results, avoid eating or drinking for a short time after applying so the gel can stay in place.

Side effects

Side effects

  • Burning or stinging
  • Inflammation
  • Temporary numbness

Stop using and get medical help immediately if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, such as wheezing, breathing difficulty, swelling, or hives.

  • Symptoms do not improve after a few days
  • Mouth ulcers keep coming back or are unusually severe
