What is Ashton and Parsons Teething Powder?
Ashton and Parsons Teething Powder is a traditional herbal medicine used to help relieve the symptoms of teething in babies.
It is commonly used to help soothe:
- Sore or red gums
- Flushed cheeks
- Extra dribbling
- Increased chewing on hands or toys
The powder contains tincture of Matricaria (German chamomile) and is supplied in small sachets of powder, usually in boxes of 20 or 30 sachets.
This medicine is intended for short-term use during teething episodes and is suitable for babies aged 3 months and over.
Who is Ashton and Parsons Teething Powder suitable for?
Ashton and Parsons Teething Powder is suitable for:
- Babies aged 3 months and over experiencing teething symptoms
Do not use this medicine if your baby:
- Is under 3 months old
- Is allergic to chamomile (Matricaria)
- Is allergic to plants from the daisy family (Asteraceae/Compositae) such as daisies or marigolds
- Has a lactose intolerance, unless advised by a doctor
- Has a mouth or oral infection

How to use Ashton and Parsons Teething Powder
Always use this medicine exactly as described in the leaflet.
How to give the powder
- Sit your baby upright.
- Carefully pour the powder onto the front of your baby’s tongue, a little at a time.
- Allow the powder to dissolve naturally on the tongue.
- Do not mix with water or milk.
- Do not rub the powder directly onto the gums.
Dose by age
Babies aged 3–6 months
- Give half a sachet in the morning and half a sachet in the evening.
To divide the sachet:
- Pour about half onto a spoon
- Save the remaining half for the next dose.
Babies over 6 months
- Give one full sachet in the morning and one full sachet in the evening.
If needed for extra relief:
- The dose may be repeated every 1–3 hours
- Maximum 6 doses in 24 hours
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
This medicine can sometimes be used alongside infant paracetamol (such as Calpol) if additional pain relief is needed. Always follow the dosing instructions for paracetamol.
How to store
- Store below 25°C
- Keep in a cool, dry place
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children
- Do not use if the sachet seals are broken
- Do not use after the expiry date on the packaging
Side effects
Like all medicines, Ashton and Parsons Teething Powder can cause side effects, although not every baby will experience them.
Possible side effects include:
- Skin rash
- Red or sore tongue
- Tongue sores
If you notice these symptoms, stop giving the medicine and speak to a doctor, pharmacist or health visitor.
If you have too much medicine
Giving more than the recommended amount may cause diarrhoea. If your baby receives too much, stop using the medicine and seek medical advice.
Seek urgent medical help if your baby develops:
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Severe rash
- Extreme paleness, limpness or unresponsiveness
