Vitamin C supplements offer many benefits that maintain your overall health, such as boosting your immune system, contributing to the development and repair of your body tissues and enhancing iron absorption. With a daily dose of our vitamin C tablets your body and your wellbeing is being taken care of.

How does vitamin C work

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), is a nutrient that is found in several fruits and vegetables and provides many health benefits. As our bodies do not naturally produce vitamin C it is essential we are getting enough from our diets or via supplements.

Vitamin c is a powerful antioxidant, helping the body fight off harmful free radicals. Free radicals can be produced as a by-product of normal bodily functions or even when we are being exposed to air pollution, smoking and U.V radiation from the sun.

Why is vitamin C Important

Vitamin C supports our immune system, the stronger our immune system is, the healthier we are. Evidence has shown that taking vitamin C daily has proven to reduce the duration or severity of a common cold.

Vitamin C is also critical in collagen production, with the assistance of vitamin C, collagen allows your body to heal wounds and strengthens your skin and bones.

Furthermore, research has shown that vitamin C enhances iron absorption, as iron is necessary for growth and development, it increases non-heme iron absorption so that your body utilises the iron and does not oxidise it.

Who is vitamin C good for

Vitamin C supplements are suitable for most as it is a vital vitamin needed by your body.

What happens when you are vitamin C deficient

A lack of vitamin C can lead to early signs of fatigue, pain in your joints, being easily bruised.

You are mostly at risk of vitamin C deficiency if you are:

  • Drinking or taking drugs frequently and not having a balanced diet

  • Elderly and have a reduced appetite, as you may eat a less varied diet

  • Someone with a medical condition where this affects your body’s function to absorb and digest food, for example Crohn’s disease.

  • Someone who is a smoker, as vitamin C is used up quicker due to the harmful free radicals.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding as women require higher amounts of vitamin C.

How do you take vitamin C

Vitamin C supplements should be taken once a day, ideally with a meal and swallowed with a cold drink or water if purchased as a tablet. Vitamin C also comes in several forms, such as chewable tablets and effervescent tablets, which are either chewed or dissolved in water.

Side effects and precautions

With any supplements, side effects may occur, however this is usually present if you take too much of the recommended dosage, such as taking more than one gummie a day. If you experience any of the following, contact your doctor straight away:

  • Nausea, such as headaches.

  • Vomiting

  • Stomach cramps

  • Fatigue or sleepiness

Taking vitamin C alongside certain medication can also have an effect on your body, it is important to be aware of the following:

  • Chemotherapy - With the use of antioxidants, if you are currently going through chemotherapy this may reduce the effect of any chemotherapy drugs

  • Aluminium - Taking vitamin C may increase the consumption of aluminium based medications. If you are someone with a kidney problem, this could be harmful for you.

  • Oestrogen - If you are taking vitamin C with oral contraceptives, this may increase your oestrogen levels.
