Threadworms are small, white thread-like worms that live in your digestive tract and can be seen in your stool (poo). They are harmless, but they frequently cause itchiness and irritation around the anus, particularly at night.

Ovex Mebendazole

Ovex Mebendazole tablets work by stopping the worms from absorbing the sugars they need to survive in the digestive tract, without these sugars the threadworms will die. A single dose of mebendazole will kill threadworms, however some of the eggs may survive and a second dose may be required after 2 weeks to prevent reinfection

This is suitable for adults and children over the age of 2.

How to Take Ovex Mebendazole?

This treatment is a single tablet per person. Adults and children over 2 years old can take one tablet only. The tablets are orange flavoured and may be chewed or swallowed whole. Crush tablets before giving to young children. This tablet is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. After taking the tablet, please make sure to take a shower to get rid of the worm eggs including thoroughly  cleaning  under your  nails and changing bed sheets and clothing to help minimise the likelihood of reinfection.

Precautions

Do not use this if any of the following apply to you:

  • If you are taking the medicine Metronidazole

  • If you are taking the medicine Cimetidine

  • If you have noticed bleeding during your bowel movement

  • If you have diarrhoea

Make sure to consult your doctor for advice before taking any medicine.

Warning

A single dose of this medicine will kill threadworms. However, it may not destroy their eggs, which can cause reinfection and also infect other people. It is therefore strongly recommended that all members of the family (except pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under two) are treated at the same time and that precautions are taken to prevent re-infection.

In case of re-infection, a second dose can be taken after two weeks.

Seek advice before using if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or suffer from allergies.
