What is Ultra Chloraseptic Anaesthetic Throat Spray?

Ultra Chloraseptic Throat Spray is a pharmacy medicine used to relieve sore throat pain quickly. It contains benzocaine a local anaesthetic that numbs the painful area, helping to reduce discomfort when swallowing.

It provides fast, temporary relief for an irritated or painful throat.

Who is it suitable for?

Suitable for:

  • Adults
  • Children aged 6 years and over

Not suitable for:

  • Children under 6 years
  • Anyone allergic to benzocaine or similar local anaesthetics

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before use if you have asevere or persistent sore throat, or if your symptoms include high fever, rash, breathing difficulty, or trouble swallowing, as these can indicate a more serious condition.

Who should not use it / Warnings

Do not use if:

  • You are allergic to benzocaine or any ingredients in the spray
  • You have a sore throat that is severe, keeps coming back, or lasts more than a few days with other concerning symptoms

Important use limits:

  • Do not use more than 8 times in 24 hours
  • Do not use for more than 3 days in a row

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to a pharmacist or healthcare professional before using.

How to use

Adults

  • Spray 3 times towards the back of the throat

Children 6 to 12 years

  • Spray once with adult supervision

How often

  • Repeat every 2 to 3 hours
  • Maximum 8 times in one day
  • Do not use for more than 3 consecutive days

After using:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for a short time so the numbing effect can work properly.

Side effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Temporary numbness or tingling in the throat
  • Mild throat or mouth irritation
  • Slight change in taste

Stop using the spray and seek medical help urgently if you get signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat, or breathing difficulties.

When to seek medical advice

Speak to a pharmacist, GP, or urgent care if:

  • Symptoms last longer than 3 days
  • Symptoms worsen or keep coming back
  • You have a high fever, rash, breathing difficulty or severe pain
  • You have trouble swallowing saliva or feel very unwell
