What is Orajel Regular Strength Gel for Toothache?
Orajel Regular Strength Gel is a fast-acting topical treatment used to relieve toothache and minor mouth pain. It is applied directly to the affected area inside the mouth.
It contains benzocaine, a local anaesthetic that works by temporarily numbing the painful area.

Who is Orajel Regular Strength Gel suitable for?

Suitable for:
- Adults
- Children aged 12 years and over
Not suitable for:
- Children under 12 years
- Anyone allergic to benzocaine or other local anaesthetics
- People with a history of methaemoglobinaemia

How to use Orajel Regular Strength Gel
Use exactly as directed on the label or as advised by your pharmacist.
Typical use
- Wash hands before and after use
- Apply a small amount of gel to a clean fingertip or cotton bud
- Gently apply to the affected area inside the mouth
- Use up to four times daily if needed
Do not exceed the recommended frequency of use.
Avoid eating immediately after application to prevent accidental biting of the numbed area.
If symptoms persist for more than 7 days, worsen, or are accompanied by fever, seek advice from a dentist or doctor.
If too much is used or swallowed accidentally, seek medical advice.
How to store Orajel Regular Strength Gel
- Store at room temperature
- Keep the tube tightly closed
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children
- Do not use after the expiry date
Side effects
Like all medicines, this product can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Common:
- Mild stinging or burning at the application site
- Temporary numbness of the mouth
Stop using and seek medical advice urgently if:
- You develop signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling, or breathing difficulties
- You notice unusual tiredness, shortness of breath, or bluish skin (signs of methaemoglobinaemia)
