What is Atovaquone/Proguanil 250mg/100mg?

Atovaquone/Proguanil 250mg/100mg is a prescription medicine used to prevent and treat malaria a serious infection spread by mosquito bites in certain parts of the world. It is the generic version of Malarone.

It contains two active ingredients that work together to stop the malaria parasite from surviving and multiplying in the body.

What it can be used for:

  • Prevention of malaria when travelling to malaria-risk areas
  • Treatment of uncomplicated malaria , particularly caused by Plasmodium falciparum

  • Atovaquone 250mg – interferes with the parasite’s energy production
  • Proguanil 100mg – prevents the parasite from multiplying and enhances the effect of atovaquone

Who is it suitable for?

Suitable for:

  • Adults
  • Adolescents and children weighing over 40kg(for the 250mg/100mg strength)
  • Travellers visiting malaria-endemic areas

Not suitable for:

  • People allergic to atovaquone or proguanil
  • People with severe kidney problems unless advised by a specialist

How to take Atovaquone/Proguanil 250mg/100mg

Take exactly as prescribed and read the patient information leaflet before use.

For malaria prevention:

  • Take 1 tablet once daily
  • Start 1–2 days before travel to a malaria-risk area
  • Continue daily during your stay
  • Continue for 7 days after leaving the area

For malaria treatment:

  • The dose may differ and is usually taken for 3 days
  • Follow your prescriber’s instructions carefully

Important advice:

  • Take with food or a milky drink to improve absorption
  • Complete the full course
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember
  • Do not take a double dose

Malaria prevention tablets do not replace mosquito bite protection. Use nets, repellents, and protective clothing.

Side effects

Not everyone experiences side effects.

Common side effects:

  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach pain or diarrhoea
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Fever

Seek urgent medical attention if you experience:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
