What is Bisodol and what does it treat?

Bisodol is an antacid remedy that can be purchased over the counter to treat symptoms of indigestion. The active ingredients work by treating the pain and discomfort of acid indigestion, heartburn, and trapped wind.

Who is Bisodol suitable for?

Bisodol is suitable for adults, the elderly and children aged 12 and over suffering from symptoms of indigestion.

You should not take Bisodol Indigestion Relief tablets if you:

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients contained in Bisodol
  • Have been told the level of phosphate in your blood is low (hypophosphataemia)
  • Have heart or kidney problems

You should speak to your GP before taking Bisodol if you

  • Have been told you have an intolerance to some sugars
  • Are following a controlled sodium diet
  • Are taking other medications
  • Are pregnant, planning to be pregnant or breastfeeding

How to take Bisodol

You should always take Bisodol as advised by pharmacist, and refer to the patient information leaflet.

For adults, the elderly and children aged 12 and over

Suck or chew one or two tablets, as required.

Children under 12

Not recommended for this age group.

If you take more Bisodol tablets than recommended, it is unlikely to cause harm. However, if you experience any side effects following this, such as severe constipation, bloating or diarrhoea, which do not go away, consult your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible.

When storing Bisodol, ensure to keep the medication out of direct sunlight, out of the sight and reach of children, and below 25 degrees celsius. Do not use this medication after the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Bisodol is unlikely to cause side effects, however some patients report mild diarrhoea or constipation.

In rare cases, patients may experience an allergic reaction to Bisodol

Signs of a severe allergic reaction are:

  • Hives
  • An itchy rash
  • Swelling of the tongue, face, lips, or throat

If you are concerned that you may be having an allergic reaction, you should stop taking Bisodol and seek medical attention immediately.
