What is Nurofen for Children?

Nurofen for Children is a sugar-free and colour-free orange flavoured liquid medicine used to relieve pain and reduce fever in children. It contains the active ingredient ibuprofen (100mg per 5ml), which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Ibuprofen works by reducing inflammation, pain, and high temperature.

Nurofen for Children can help relieve:

  • Minor aches, sprains, and strains
  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Fever following immunisations

It is supplied as an oral suspension for children aged 3 months to 9 years weighing over 5kg.

Who is Nurofen for Children suitable for?

Nurofen for Children is suitable for:

  • Babies aged 3 months and over weighing more than 5kg
  • Children up to approximately 9 years of age

Do not give this medicine if your child:

  • Is under 3 months old or weighs less than 5kg
  • Has had an allergic reaction to ibuprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
  • Has or has previously had stomach ulcers or bleeding
  • Has severe kidney, liver, or heart problems
  • Has hereditary fructose intolerance

How to take Nurofen for Children

Always use this medicine exactly as directed on the packaging or by a healthcare professional.

Typical use

  • Shake the bottle well before each dose
  • Use the dosing syringe or spoon supplied
  • Give by mouth only
  • Leave 6–8 hours between doses
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose

If your child has a sensitive stomach, the medicine may be given with food or milk.

Dose recommendations

  • Babies aged 3 – 6 months (over 5kg): 2.5ml per dose, up to 3–4 times in 24 hours.
  • Babies aged 6 –12 months: 2.5ml per dose, up to 3–4 times in 24 hours.
  • Children aged 1 – 3 years: 5ml per dose, up to 3 times daily.
  • Children aged 4 – 6 years: 7.5ml (5ml + 2.5ml) per dose, up to 3 times daily.
  • Children aged 7 – 9 years: 10ml (two 5ml doses) per dose, up to 3 times daily.

Always leave 6 – 8 hours between doses.

If symptoms last longer than 3 days, worsen, or you are concerned, speak to a pharmacist or doctor. If too much medicine is given Seek medical advice immediately and take the medicine bottle with you.
