What are Optrex Infected Eye Drops?

Optrex Infected Eye Drops are antibiotic eye drops containing chloramphenicol. They are used to treat acute bacterial conjunctivitis, an infection of the front surface of the eye.

They can help with symptoms such as:

  • Red or swollen whites of the eye or eyelids
  • Sticky discharge, especially on waking
  • Gritty, sore, or irritated eyes

These drops are not suitable for deeper or more serious eye infections.

Who are Optrex Infected Eye Drops suitable for?

Optrex Infected Eye Drops are suitable for adults and children aged 2 years and over with suspected bacterial conjunctivitis.

A prescriber will review your information and confirm if this treatment is appropriate for you.

Do not use and seek advice first if you have:

  • Severe eye pain
  • Changes to vision
  • Marked sensitivity to light
  • A recent eye injury or eye surgery
  • Symptoms affecting only one eye with severe redness or swelling
  • A foreign body in the eye

Do not wear contact lenses during treatment unless advised by a healthcare professional.

How to use Optrex Infected Eye Drops

You should always administer Optrex Infected Eye Drops as advised by your pharmacist.

Typical use for adults and children aged 2 and over:

  • Wash your hands before and after use
  • Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid
  • Apply 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye
  • Close the eye gently for 1 to 2 minutes
  • Repeat in the other eye if needed
  • Replace the cap immediately after use

Dosing is commonly:

  • Every 2 to 4 hours for the first 2 days
  • Then 2 to 4 times a day until the infection clears

Complete the full course even if symptoms improve. If symptoms do not improve within a few days or worsen, seek medical advice.

How to store Optrex Infected Eye Drops

  • Store Optrex Infected Eye Drops in the fridge, between 2 to 8 degrees celsius.
  • Do not store at room temperature.
  • Keep the cap tightly closed.
