Male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) accounts for 95% of cases of hair loss in men. Male pattern baldness occurs in around 40% of all men by the age of 35 and 50% of all men by the age of 50. This type of hair loss is caused due to hormonal and genetic factors. The process of hair loss tends to be that hair is initially lost from the temples and the crown of the head, gradually thinning and allowing the scalp to become visible, commonly forming a 'U' pattern around the balding areas. Currently a medicine called Finasteride is the only licensed prescription treatment available. It is available in a branded form called Propecia and a non-branded generic form that is cheaper. It has been shown to encourage hair growth in 50% of men taking it, and prevent further hair loss in 40% of men. Unfortunately Finasteride isn’t available on the NHS however it is available via IQ Doctor’s online clinic following a consultation from one of our GMC registered doctors.
